The Sarah Diaries: Happiness Is…

I’m a firm believer that happiness can be found in multiple areas and that everyone has their own insta-happy triggers. Things like sounds, smells, pictures, textures, etc… that trigger a happy memory that automatically makes us smile. Go ahead, try not to think of one, I dare you!

According to Science and Cosmo (I knew I loved this mag for a reason!), there’s actually a list of suggested things you can do to make yourself happy, specifically in your own home – and with the sun going away earlier these days, seasonal depression will start creeping back in our lives. I’ll be completely honest with you, I struggle bad this time of year with finding my happy place. If anything, at least I’ve given myself some ideas to help me, but hopefully I’m helping you too.

Here’s the full list…

Green or yellow walls: A study from Amsterdam found that these two colors evoked the most feelings of happiness.

Fresh flowers: Researchers at Rutgers University found that fresh flowers trigger happy emotions.

Sentimental photos: A study at the University of Portsmouth found that sentimental photos give you positive feelings and a sense of calmness.

Vanilla-scented candles:  A Chemical Senses study found that the smell of vanilla improves your mood.

A journal: Keeping a journal can make you more grateful and research published in Psychological Science found that re-reading past entries can make you feel happier.

A pet: Any dog or car owner knows how much a pet improves your life, and research published in Journal of Personality and Social Psychology found that pets alleviate feelings of loneliness and isolation.

A made bed: According to a survey by Hunch.com, 71% of people who make their beds every day consider themselves happy, while 62% of people who don’t make the bed say they’re unhappy.

No clutter: Researchers from UCLA found a link between clutter and stress, particularly with women. So de-clutter and be happy.

I hope you find your happy place this fall/winter! If you need help or suggestions, I’m always an email away: sarah@983thecoast.com
