AUGUST 24 - MAMMINA'S AT EDGEWATER

Mammina's at Edgewater is managed by Tim Mammina who brings with him a long tradition of serving great food, including "The World's Best Hamburger", as quoted by almost everyone that has ever had one.

In 1905, Benedetto Mammina - Tim's great grandfather - immigrated to Chicago from Monreal, Italy. He then moved his family to Coloma, Michigan and later to Benton Harbor. Actually, he was the first in Berrien County to obtain a legal liquor license at the end of prohibition in 1933. Benedetto opened a tavern on Territorial Road in Benton Harbor. In 1940, Benedetto's son Tony - Tim's grandfather - took over the business. In 1950, a new tavern was built across the street from the old one.

It was truly a family affair at the tavern - with Tony's brother, daughters-in-law, son-in-law, grandchildren, cousins, brothers-in-law, and nephews all working for Tony and his wife Lillian. Tim took over management at the tavern from 1989 to 1992, when he moved to the Detroit area in order to further increase his restaurant knowledge. Tim then returned in 2000 to manage two other locally successful restaurants.

Mammina's at Edgewater will continue to be a family affair with the involvement of the 5th generation (great, great grandchildren) and by serving traditional family recipes. However, most noted will be the return of "The World's Best Hamburgers" - a reputation given to Mammina's Bar during its 60 years on Territorial Road. And one last thing… the original grill - from the bar that established the standard of a Mammina Burger - is back and will be used to continue this family tradition at Mammina's at Edgewater.

Situated along Red Arrow Highway, an historic stretch of road that winds along Michigan’s Southwestern shoreline, the Red Arrow Roadhouse still has the inviting appeal of roadhouses once found while touring the countryside in the 40’s and 50’s.

With its stucco exterior and arched doorway still intact, the building is a reflection of years past. Inside the restaurant guest are greeted by a charming dining room with knotty pine walls, mounted game, antiques and memorabilia. Rustic hardwood floors and quaint tables are as inviting as the crafted wood bar, which originally graced Chicago’s East Bank Club.
