To be brief, my mother leaves myself and others without words as she embodies strength, kindness, and creativity in a way others can only wish to. Single mother and domestic abuse survivor. From the day I was born, my father was there, but not present. The partner of a struggling alcoholic, my mother spent all of herself to provide for us – working two jobs to pay the mortgage and afford my dance lessons, an emotional outlet she knew I shouldn’t go without. Creative muse. After my father left, things were tougher than ever. We ate on food stamps. She continued to work, but all the while was strategizing to achieve her highest aspiration – to open her own slipcover business. She did. Super Mom. Next Spring I will be graduating from the University of Michigan as a first generation college student with a degree in Social Work. My mother’s strength and courage inspired me to study to become a resource for other survivors of domestic abuse. My mother did everything in her power to get me here.
