President Barack Obama's latest budget proposal includes the same amount of funding for Great Lakes restoration in 2013 as his 2012 budget did -- 300 million dollars...and advocates appear to be pretty satisfied with that. The Healing Our Waters Great Lakes Coalition's Jeff Skelding says that, in past years, congressional delegations from the Great Lakes states have shown impressive bipartisan support for lake cleanup programs, which are now showing a return on the investment:
Great Lakes advocates say that preventing the spread of invasive species and cleaning up pollution are top priorities. It's estimated that every dollar that goes into Great Lakes restoration produces at least two dollars in economic benefits, and that more than one and a half million people across the region depend on the Lakes for their jobs.
