Happy Headline of the Day: 1 Kidney Saves 7 Lives

A man in Australia decided to donate his kidney to a friend, only to find that the donation wasn’t necessary. But that didn’t stop him. He ended up donating the kidney to a stranger, which set off a chain reaction that ended up saving seven lives in one day.

You see, usually a kidney donation occurs between two people who know each other. But, not all kidney donors and recipients are compatible.

So when 54-year-old Paul Bannan donated his kidney to a stranger, it allowed others in this “kidney exchange” to donate their kidney to a stranger – knowing their friend or family member was going to be taken care of.

After all the dominoes – or kidneys – fell into place, seven transplants occurred.

Surgeons performed 14 separate operations to remove and transplant kidneys in one day … in six different hospitals.

Paul said he just wanted to help others and wasn’t bothered that that his kidney went to a stranger because – as he said – a stranger is just a friend he hasn’t met yet.
