Happy Headline: Mother and Daughter Reunite after 82 Years

A New York woman finally reunited with her long-lost birth mother after more than 80 years.

96-year-old Lena Pierce says she always wondered what happened to the daughter she was forced to give up in 1933. Pierce was only 14 when she gave birth to a baby girl she named Eva May. But after caring for her for six months, the state of New York took the child away, saying that Pierce was unfit for motherhood at such a young age.

The baby was adopted by a family on Long Island and her name was changed to Betty Morrell. Betty lost both of her adopted parents while she was in her 20s and set out to find her biological mother.

After five decades of searching, Betty – with the help of her granddaughter and some online research tools – was finally able to locate Pierce and contacted her.

Pierce, now 96, was married twice and went on to have seven more kids. She says, “There was a lot of times I worried about her and wondered where she was.”

She doesn't have to wonder anymore. Last Friday, mother and daughter were reunited at an airport in Binghamton, New York. Betty says, “I'm not alone anymore. I have my mother, and I have sisters and brothers. It's surreal, but so wonderful to be together again after all this time.”
