A simple project by a Boy Scout in Wisconsin has had a huge impact on the population of songbirds – especially bluebirds.

Kevin Keys put together 10 “nest boxes” to give the bluebirds safe homes, which has been a big problem because cities don’t provide much cover for those birds.

Working with the charity Bluebird Experience, Kevin’s nest boxes are up and running and attracting the birds – with information about the birds being sent to Cornell University in New York so scientists there can track the growth of songbirds across the country.

Kevin says he was inspired to do the project by his brother – who did a similar project a few years back. He also was inspired to take action when he learned bluebirds were almost extinct in the ’70s.

Since then, thanks to Kevin and others who have come to the rescue, the bluebird population has rebounded a lot – with plenty of work to still be done.
