Researchers at Stanford University in California performed a medical miracle when they implanted microchips into the brain of a paralyzed man that allowed him to write words using only his mind.
The man had been paralyzed below the neck after a spinal cord injury in 2007.
But even without the use of his arms and hands, the man was able to imagine using his hand to write on a notepad — and then a computer converted these thoughts into text on a screen.
One of the researchers, Dr. Jaimie Henderson, reported that the man was able to compose sentences nearly as quickly as someone typing on a smartphone.
While more work needs to be done to perfect this technology, everyone involved is very hopeful that this breakthrough will lead to others having the chance to regain this important skill in the future. (USA Today)
