Back in November of 2020, Chris Nikic became the first person with Down syndrome to complete an Ironman triathlon. To complete the race, Chris had to swim 2.4 miles, ride a bike for 112 miles and run a 26.2 marathon in under 17 hours. He crossed the finish line with just 14 minutes to spare.
Because of this accomplishment — and the inspiration he has provided others — Chris will be honored with the Jimmy V Award for Perseverance at The 2021 ESPYS, which is a big sports award show that airs on July 10th on ABC.
Since finishing his Ironman race, Chris has been spreading his message to be “1% better” every single day, in every aspect of life.
An executive at ESPN, Rob King, said that the network was “honored to present Chris with this award and look forward to seeing what he accomplishes next.” (ESPN)
