While scuba diving in the Cheboygan River in Michigan last month, Jennifer Dowker found a treasure. A small, green glass bottle with a piece of paper rolled up inside was sitting at the bottom of the river, just underneath Jennifer’s glass-bottom boat.
Sure enough. It was a message in a bottle.
She worked together with her employee, Rob Hemmer, to open the bottle. While the paper inside was wet, it was still readable. The message requested that the bottle be returned to a man named George Morrow.
Using social media, Jennifer was able to track down George’s daughter, Michele Primeau.
Michele was excited to see the bottle and the note — and explained to Jennifer that her dad, George — a World War II veteran who passed away in 1995 — probably dropped the bottle into the river right around his 18th birthday.
Although Jennifer wanted to return the note to George’s family, Michele decided that the note should stay with the person who discovered it.
So, Jennifer will keep the note and share it with others who go on scuba tours with her, which makes Michele feel good because it’s a way for her dad to live on and touch the lives of others seeking adventure. (Washington Post)
