90-year-old Dean Troutman of Illinois is passionate about helping children, as he continues to take big actions to raise money for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
Back in 2015, he walked over 500 miles for St. Jude, raising $10,000 along the way.
Now, he’s back on the road, walking a staggering 3,600 miles from Illinois through 15 states and back to Illinois — and his wish is that people who hear his story are inspired to donate $36, one penny for every mile he walks.
While on this mission, Dean is pushing a converted pet carrier, which he calls his “buggy.” It carries everything he needs for the journey — food, clothing, maps, as well as a photo of his late wife, Peggy, looking back at him.
He’s using a Facebook page to allow people to keep up with where he’s at and what he’s up to.
And with the children of St. Jude in mind, Dean believes the journey is worth it, explaining that he’s “hoping each day that we can raise enough funds that we can help some of these kids.” (WLFI-TV)

Has your circle of friends gotten smaller? A study published by the Survey Center on American Life found that Americans have fewer friends than they used to. The study revealed that 49% of Americans over the age of 18 said they had fewer than three close friends. In 1990, just 27% of Americans said they had fewer than three close friends. In 1990, 33% reported having 10 or more close friends, while today, only 13% said they had 10 or more good friends.
The pandemic definitely had an effect on friendships. The study found that 47% of Americans said they’d lost touch with at least a few friends over the last year. Women, in particular, said they’d lost touch with friends during the pandemic, with 59% saying they had lost contact with friends in the last year.
But it’s not just the pandemic that has led to fewer close friendships. Things like marrying later, spending more time with their kids than past generations, and working longer hours has also affected friendships. (NY Post)

Why do these things not happen to us when we’re bored? A man in South Carolina who won $375,000 on a lottery scratch-off ticket said he only bought the ticket because he was bored and looking for something to do. (UPI)

A legislator who introduced a “Free Britney” bill in Congress this month pulled out a big weapon to support Britney Spears — comparing her dad’s oversight to “Communist China.”
South Carolina representative Nancy Mace told Fox News “As a mom, one of the things I was really disturbed by is they’re forcing her on birth control, an IUD, to not allow her to have kids. It’s just really crazy what’s going on. These are things that happen in Communist China, not the United States of America.”
Mace says that that if her bill passes, it would allow someone who is under a conservatorship to petition a judge or court, for an independent or public guardian to make sure the conservator doesn’t have a conflict of interest.
There are about 1.3 million people in the country who are under a conservatorship right now.

Earlier this month, severe storms and flooding affected thousands of people in western Germany and Belgium.
A charity based in Louisville, Kentucky — called WaterStep — saw the news and were able to help the people there who are still struggling.
WaterStep helps communities around the world maintain safe water supplies.
In this case, the group was able to send eight water disinfecting devices to the area, which will end up providing clean drinking water that will also allow those overrun by the floods to cook, clean and bathe.
Certainly, the people of western Germany and Belgium have a lot of work to do to get back to normal, but thanks to WaterStep, many of them will have a safe supply of water until that work is done. (WDRB-TV)

Britney Spears formally petitioned the court to oust her father. Her new lawyer, Mathew Rosengart, filed on Friday a 127-page document detailing why Jamie Spears is the wrong person to oversee Britney’s finances and showbiz contracts.
According to the filing, Britney’s estate is worth $69 million. However, the lawyer suggests that dad syphoned much of her fortune into his bank account.
Rosengart also identified the accountant they wish to replace her father. Jason Rubin has expertise in probing financial records for misconduct, which might raise eyebrows among Britney’s relatives.
The court will consider Rubin at a hearing in December—after Britney’s 40th birthday. She plans to attend. Once a conservator has replaced Jamie Spears, then the lawyer will work toward gaining Britney’s freedom. At the current pace, it may happen in 2022 at the earliest. (The Hollywood Reporter)

Have you been dining out and noticed a few too many people being a bit rude? … According to a recent article, restaurant owners say some customers have “forgotten to be human” during the pandemic. Seems there’s been quite the uptick in rude, demanding, and angry customers as restaurants have re-opened.

Would you give this a try, or would it be a hard pass?  There’s a small-but-passionate group of people online who claim the best snack in the world is OREOS WITH SALSA. People have been hyping it on social media for a while, so it’s not a new idea.  But a writer for the site Delish.com just tried it.  And their verdict is . . . NOT good.  They described the taste as “musty,” and said dunking them in milk is a much better option. Some people claim it’s great though.  If you really want to go all-in, they say to buy a pack of Oreos . . . remove the middle row . . . and fill it to the top with salsa for easy dipping.

Jerry Seinfeld had a classic bit about the Olympics, and said he’d rather win bronze than silver . . . because silver would be a bummer, but bronze would feel like you won SOMETHING at least.  So do you agree with that? Someone polled 2,500 people, and it turns out most of us DON’T agree.  Of the people who answered, 93% would rather win silver.  Only 7% said bronze. If you grew up in the “participation trophy” era though, you might be the outlier.  People aged 18 to 25 were more than twice as likely than older people to say they’d rather win bronze.

If you feel passionately about finding out what Dorito or Cheeto dust would taste like on a potato chip, listen up.  Frito-Lay just debuted a new line of potato chips that taste like OTHER chips and snacks. The three flavors are Cool Ranch Doritos potato chips . . . Cheetos potato chips . . . and chips that taste like Funyuns.  So if you think those snacks would be better in potato chip form, get excited. It’s not clear how many stores have them, but right now Target.com appears to have all three.  And they’re a limited time only thing, so they might only be around for summer.

Ed Sheeran thought about a career change after his daughter Lyra Antarctica was born — with his eye on being a stay-at-home dad.
Ed, who’s back on the charts with “Bad Habits,” tells Sirius XM that he almost extended his 18-month hiatus into a permanent vacation. He says his first thought was “Right, that’s it … this is me I’m just gonna be a dad. I’m not gonna play music anymore.”
But after further consideration, he realized little Lyra might not like that idea. As he puts it, ” I was suddenly like, it is more important for my daughter to grow up knowing that her parents love working hard and and love creating and enjoy their jobs — and seeing that rather than like looking at your dad as technically unemployed.”

In central Texas, a German Shepherd K-9 police dog named Bear was sent off into retirement in style with a retirement party.
Bear served six years as a police dog in the Taylor County Sheriff’s Office. He originally joined the force in 2015, thanks to a donation from a local business.
During his years on the force, Bear helped fellow officers track down and locate missing children and elderly people, sniffed out illegal drugs and assisted others in need.
And at his retirement party, Bear took photographs with his co-workers as they wished him a happy farewell. An officer also read a proclamation, describing the dog’s accomplishments during his career.
His handler — Deputy Brandon Abbott — is sad to see Bear leave the police force, but isn’t too heartbroken as Brandon is adopting Bear, allowing the partners to stay together and allowing Bear to enjoy his retirement in comfort. (Yahoo)

Have you ever completely unplugged for a day? Longer? Seems most of us haven’t. A new poll found that 73% said they can’t even imagine going 24 hours without looking at a screen. That’s probably because research has found that adults spend, on average, about six hours a day staring at a variety of screens.

Want to be happier, healthier, and have more friends? Join a sports team. A study found that people who are on a sports team are healthier, have more friends, go to more parties, and have a better work-life balance than those not on a team.

Do you have a bunch of unused gift cards stuffed in a drawer somewhere?new BankRate survey found that 51-percent of us are holding unused gift cards, vouchers, or store credits, to the tune of roughly 15-billion dollars in outstanding value. The study also found that millennials are more likely than older folks to have unused balances and are less likely to believe they’ll ever redeem them. Experts suggest using gift cards, vouchers and credits right away.

Amy Shecter, the CEO of Ever/Body said, “The Zoom effect is real, and it has definitely been a catalyst for increased interest in cosmetic dermatology treatments.” (ABC)

Thanks to Detective Jupinka’s quick action, the girl ended up needing no further medical attention. He was in the right place at the right time — and also just happened to be the right person for the job. (New York Post)

The former Mom star revealed on her podcast, Anna Faris Is Unqualified, that she and fiancé Michael Barrett secretly eloped.
She said, “I think we’ve spent the last year in a place of reflection, in a place of kind of prioritization to some degree, a place of anxiety, a place of like, whatever, assessment. But I’m looking around, just so, just my fiancé’s right … he’s now my husband.”
Anna said she and the cinematographer wed in a courthouse ceremony on San Juan Island in Washington state. “Yes, we eloped … I’m sorry. I didn’t know … I’m sorry, honey. I just blurted that out, but it just feels [like] I can’t say fiancé anymore. Thank you, it was awesome. It feels great.”

Ever wonder how to get a bear out of your car? Some guy on TikTok found one trapped in his Nissan so, of course, he made a video out of it. Once he pried the door open, the black bear just stood there for a while until him and his buddy scared it away. The car’s interior was totaled but his video has got 20 million views, and in our new economy of likes and shares, isn’t that what truly matters?

The bad blood between Dwayne Johnson and Vin Diesel continues.
Last month Vin Diesel talked about the tension between the two action stars on the set of the Fast & Furious, saying he had to give his co-stars “a lot of tough love.”

I wish them well on Fast 9. And I wish them the best of luck on Fast 10 and Fast 11 and the rest of the Fast & Furious movies they do that will be without me.”
The two have been publicly feuding ever since The Rock called some of his unnamed male costars “candy a**es.”
