The Happy Headline of the Day – Tuesday, January 12

coast-happy-headline-flipper-nospon
It wasn’t a very good football season for Michael Carsley of Atlanta, Georgia, who finished last in his fantasy football league. Because he finished last, he had to suffer the punishment of spending 24 hours in a Waffle House restaurant. But, there was a catch …For every waffle that he ate, one hour would be removed from his total time.
So earlier this month, he sat down and ate 18 waffles — which meant he was in the restaurant for six hours. But while he was there, he was also collecting donations online.
The final bill came to about $49 — but Michael was able to raise $1,040 from people who were cheering him on remotely.
He ended up donating all of that money to his server, Mosammat Shumi, who has worked at Waffle House for 11 years, but had never seen anything quite like this.
Mosammat admitted that she “felt bad” for Michael and wished she “could have made him some thin waffles” earlier in the day.
But it all worked out. Michael fulfilled his obligation to his fantasy football league and Mosammat got the tip of a lifetime and had a day at work that she will never forget.

Kim Cattrall, who had said she’d never return to the franchise, won’t be part of the revival or the windfall. But Parker denied a feud on Instagram Sunday, saying, “No. I don’t dislike her. There are currently two flavors: Pontch’s Mix, made with peanut butter and pretzel swirls, and Rosie’s Batch, made with pumpkin and mini cookies. (Delish)

Is Dry January already over? We’re not even midway through the month, but folks are already giving up on their resolutions – including ditching alcohol for the month. But at least they haven’t totally abandoned their goal to drink less. Many are opting for a “Damp” month instead — which simply means cutting back on drinking instead of giving it up altogether for the month. (Insider)

Got brain fog? Go for a jog. A French study found that just a quick, 15-minute run will not only give you a boost in energy and happiness … but it will help you think more clearly and be more productive. (Quartz)

Dr. Anthony Fauci thinks that if everyone would smarten up and practice COVID-19 protocols, we could see theaters and other live entertainment venues reopening “sometime in the fall of 2021.”
He says, “If everything goes right…by the time we get to the early to mid-fall, you can have people feeling safe performing onstage as well as people in the audience.”
But for this to happen, vaccine distribution needs to succeed, theaters have to have good ventilation and proper air filters, and audience members will have to wear masks. Under those circumstances, Fauci says, “I think you can then start getting back to almost full capacity of seating.”
While the concert industry is hopeful for touring to resume this year, many artists have already been moving 2021 shows to 2022.

A man who’s accused of stalking Katy Perry is in even bigger trouble right now — after he skipped a court date on Friday.
William Terry allegedly hopped a fence in an effort to get into Katy’s Beverly Hills home last September, and was formally charged with one count of trespassing last Wednesday. TMZ reports that the 38-year-old was supposed to show up for an arraignment on Friday, but failed to appear — so a judge issued a warrant for his arrest.
Terry had spent months sending lewd and threatening messages to Katy and Orlando Bloom, so a court issued a restraining order keeping him from contacting either of them in any way.

And, for those of you that are fans of the Netflix show “Ozark,” Julia Garner, aka Ruth Langmore, may play Madonna in a new movie about the pop star’s life.

When coronavirus hit in March of last year, University of Pennsylvania student Ben Berman was planning a dinner party with a handful of friends, but had to cancel the party because everything was getting shut down.
So instead of feeding his friends at his place, Ben made pizza — and then dropped the pizza in paper bags down from his second-story window, using a string and pully system.
Well, that stunt has grown since then, and Ben is now selling the pizza from his window to anyone who makes a donation. But instead of pocketing the money, he’s donating all the proceeds to charity.
Amazingly, he’s already raised more than $30,000 — and says he wants to “keep adding on zeros to that number.”
If all goes according to plan, he’ll receive his Master of Business Administration degree in the spring and work in the health care industry. And even though he expects to be busy with his career, he hopes to keep this charity effort as a big part of his life moving forward. (New York Post)

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have “no plans” to return to social media any time soon.
A source tells The Times of London that the couple are “very unlikely” to have an online presence because of the “hate” they’ve received.
Their last post was on Instagram in March 2020. They wrote a goodbye message saying “while you may not see us here, the work continues.”
While they’re done with social media, they’re not done with the royal family. Harry and Meghan will reportedly reunite publicly with the Queen at her annual birthday parade in the spring.

Jason Sudeikis isn’t taking Olivia Wilde‘s romance with Harry Styles well.
A source tells ET that the couple wanted to remain close after their split for the “sake of their kids,” but Jason “has been really hurt and somewhat jealous that Olivia has moved on with Harry.”
Jason had hope he and Olivia “would eventually reconcile and get back together,” according to the insider.
There’s been some question about the timing of their breakup, but the source tells ET it was “almost a year ago,” not in November.
The source says Olivia, who directed Harry in upcoming psychological thriller Don’t Worry Darling, “is really happy with Harry and they have fun together and have gotten to be really close through spending so much time together both on set and in their personal lives.”

Mashable says HBO is bringing back Sex and the City. Ten half-hour episodes will air on HBO Max and will star Sarah Jessica Parker, Cynthia Nixon and Kristin Davis as Carrie Bradshaw, Miranda Hobbes and Charlotte York. The show will follow the trio as they try to navigate life, friendships and relationships in their 50s  Kim Cattrall will not be returning to the series.

TODAY IS:
Step in a Puddle and Splash Your Friends Day: A good day to act like a kid.
National Clean off Your Desk Day: Observed annually on the second Monday in January, this is a day to start the new year fresh … with a clean and organized desk.

So just how stressful was 2020 for people? According to a new survey, nearly 17% went to therapy for the first time last year, and 15% began taking meds for anxiety and depression for the first time in 2020.

We all wish we could just lose weight on our sleep, right? Well, now you can – and, apparently, all it takes is drinking some tea. A study from the University of Tsukuba in Japan found that drinking oolong tea jump starts the body’s fat burning process … even when you’re asleep. According to researchers, just two cups of oolong tea a day increases the breakdown of fat.

And speaking of losing weight, A new study by Anglia Ruskin University reveals that increasing your coffee intake could lead to weight loss. Researchers had women, between the ages of 20 and 43, drink two to three cups of coffee a day. The women lost an average of 3.4% body fat during the study. Women, between the ages of 45 and 69, drank four or more cups per day and lost 4.1% body fat.

If you were able to peek into your own future, would you do it? Seems most people wouldn’t. A study found that 90% said they would not want to find out about any negative things happening to them in the future. But it seems that it’s not just bad news that people don’t want to hear about. 40% -70% said they didn’t want to learn about any future positive things either. Just 1% of those who participated in the research said they would want to know what the future holds for them.

Gwen Stefani and Blake Shelton just had their path to the altar cleared — by a Catholic Church decision to annul her marriage to Gavin Rossdale.
Us magazine reports, “Gwen was told the decision was made by the Vatican tribunal. She will be receiving the notification in writing in the next few weeks, but it’s official. It was a huge relief for Gwen because she wanted to get married by her priest and have the marriage recognized by the Catholic church.
The Catholic Church doesn’t allow divorced people to have church weddings, but it does grant annulments — which state that the previous marriage was “not valid” for one of many reasons.

Ed Sheeran is set to drop another new song — but you won’t see his name on it.
He’ll make his debut as a producer and re-mixer with a revamp of “Sword From the Stone,” a track by his longtime friend Passenger. Ed isn’t actually putting his name on the track, but is calling it the “Gingerbread Remix” — a reference to his hair color. Of course, Passenger is also an alias — the stage name of Michael Rosenberg.
A source close to the project tells Britain’s Sun, “They have been friends for years after meeting when they were teenagers and have covered songs together before but never done anything like this. Getting together in the studio wasn’t really an option in 2020, but Ed has produced this new remix of ‘Sword From the Stone’ and they both love it.”
The song is due for release next Friday.

Two months ago, the Steubenville Police Department in Ohio mourned the loss of their beloved police dog – Bono.
Just last year, Bono and his handler, Sgt. Rob Cook, were responsible for 220 drug seizures and 20 firearm seizures. Bono also appeared at dozens of public relations events at local schools and various organizations in the first 11 months of 2020.
So when Bono passed away, it was a big loss for the police department, as well as the entire community.
Well, a family in that community stepped up to fill the void by donating the money for another K-9 police dog.
The Teramana family – who helped bring Bono onto the police department – is making sure his legacy lives on with Bono’s replacement.
City officials praised the generosity of the family, pointing out that they’ve gone out of their way to do things for the city without being asked.
And because of the gift, the Steubenville Police Department will continue to be able to do an excellent job of searching for drugs and weapons – as well as lost children.

Ricky told Conan O’Brien: ”It would be good to be fed to lions at London Zoo. It would be good to give something back. We eat animals and destroy habits and at least then I could give something back.”

Can a puppy save you from political differences? We’re more politically divided than ever, but … dogs to the rescue. Are you dealing with a financial hangover this year? You’re not alone. According to a new survey, more than 50% of those surveyed admitted they’re experiencing a financial hangover because of their holiday spending. And it will take them about seven weeks to get their finances back on track after their holiday spending. 64% of respondents said they regret not handling their finances better in 2020.

Have you been doing better during COVID than most? This probably seems like a no-brainer, but a new survey found that people who are more laid back – basically those who take things more slowly than most — are doing better with all of this. And it seems these “chill” people are also more optimistic. One big common denominator with these chill people? Cooking. 71% of those surveyed said they use food and cooking as a way to connect with people.(SWNS)

Bad news if you’re always short on time. Global time officials now want to shorten a minute to 59 seconds. They say the Earth’s rotation is speeding up, making the day slightly less than 24 hours. It’s a tiny change (For example, Sunday lasted only 23 hours, 59 minutes and 59.9998927 seconds) but it’s something we could really start noticing after a few decades. 2021 is expected to be about 19-milliseconds short of a typical year.

Miley Cyrus tells Capital FM that she and Elton John have recorded a cover of Metallica’s ”Nothing Else Matters.” “I did a Metallica cover of ‘Nothing Else Matters’ featuring Elton John on piano, I’ve got Yo-Yo Ma, Chad Smith; so many all-stars in this band. I’m so excited about this collaboration. I mean, having Elton John and Metallica and me … I love when ingredients don’t quite fit,” she said. “Or it seems like a concoction that no one would ever put together, and you gotta have someone like [the song’s producer Andrew] Watt that will take that risk.”

Lindsey Buckingham tells Rolling Stone magazine that he is disappointed about the way things ended between him and Fleetwood Mac. “Am I heartbroken about not doing another tour with Fleetwood Mac? No, because I can see that there are many other areas to look into. But the one thing that does bother me and breaks my heart is we spent 43 years always finding a way to rise above our personal differences and our difficulties to pursue and articulate a higher truth. That is our legacy. That is what the songs are about. This is not the way you end something like this.”

Huey Lewis tells Classic Pop magazine that he never thought his band’s iconic “Sports” album would spawn a whopping six hit songs. “If you didn’t have a hit single, you didn’t exist, so we decided to produce ourselves in our own hometown, not in L.A. like everybody else, because we wanted to make those commercial decisions ourselves. We didn’t know we were going to have six [hits]! We just wanted one, but we also didn’t know if it was going to be a rocker or a ballad. If you listen to “Sports” now, it sounds like a record of its time – a collection of singles. That’s what the market demanded and that’s what we did. That’s probably the last ‘commercial’ decision we made, because after that record went ‘kaboom,’ we made a deal with ourselves that we’d only do things for creative reasons rather than financial ones, and haven’t done since. I’m proud of that.”

It was quite a year for a dog named Athena from Bourbon, Missouri. To start 2020 off, she had a life-saving surgery that involved having one of her legs amputated. Then, soon after that, Athena made a run for it, escaping from the yard of her owner, Dylan Summers.
Luckily, in early December, a pet rescue in East St. Louis, Illinois, took in Athena. The staff at the rescue didn’t know her real name, so they named her “Miss-A-Toe.”
That pet rescue then posted an online picture of Athena – or “Miss-A-Toe” – which led to a miracle.
A friend of Dylan’s saw the picture online and was able to let him know that Athena was safe.
Athena and Dylan were reunited. And, Dylan says Athena has settled in back in at home quickly, “like she never left.”

Now Kim’s waiting to finalize a settlement before filing for divorce.

More proof that plant-based may be the biggest food trend of 2021 … Jimmy Dean, yep, the sausage king, is introducing two new breakfast sandwiches featuring plant-based patties: Jimmy Dean’s Plant-Based Patty, Egg & Cheese Croissant Sandwich and Plant-Based Patty & Frittata Sandwich. The egg and cheese kinda defeats the whole plant-based thing – but, hey, at least the patty is plant-based. (The Takeout)

Is 30 the new 60? A new survey found that 64% of Americans between the ages of 25 and 45 feel physically older than their real age. But this is interesting … While they feel physically older, 73% say they feel mentally younger than their actual age.
What makes people feel so old? Aches and pains, apparently. And it seems these aches and pains have a lot to do with how much sitting and looking at devices that we are doing.
According to the survey, these are the top locations of aches and pains:
  1. Neck — 54%
  2. Joints — 51%
  3. Back — 50%
  4. Head — 40%
  5. Legs — 38%
What makes people feel more immature than their age? Not wanting to deal with the “challenges” of being an adult.
According to the survey, these are the biggest challenges of being an adult:
  1. Being responsible for my physical health — 40%
  2. Cooking balanced meals on a regular basis — 36%
  3. Budgeting — 36%
  4. Keeping my home clean — 34%
  5. Buying nutritious food while grocery shopping — 34% (SWNS)

Rolling Stone‘s year-end count says Tay’s Folklore was 2020’s best-selling album, and it was a long, long way back to the closest competition. Swifties snapped up 1.2 million copies of Folklore, with second place going to The Weeknd, who sold 476,000 copies of After Hours. Taylor actually made the Top 10 a second time with Evermore, which sold 270,000 copies in the three weeks it was available.

He wrote on Instagram, “Thanks to my family, friends and fans for their interest and well wishes. I’m doing great and getting excellent care from my medical team.” He went on to thanks his doctors and said he will be “out of the hospital and back home soon.”
The 55-year-old rapper, producer and music exec was rushed to Cedar-Sinai Medical Center Monday after suffering an aneurysm. He is in stable condition and undergoing tests to determine the cause of the bleeding in his brain.

Mick Fleetwood tells Rolling Stone magazine that he would love to see a musical about the band. “There’s always been talk about doing something like that. I hope it can happen at some point. Amazingly, she’s put together more than 1,700 of these special masks since all this started. But … She had to take a break back in November – to recover from coronavirus herself.
Miriam, who lives in an assisted living facility, was originally inspired to make the masks by her stepson, who happens to be a doctor.
She admits the virus made her feel exhausted, but was able to regain her strength by taking a lot of naps.
And then, once she was back to feeling 100%, she got back to work, cutting and sewing fabric for more masks.
It doesn’t seem like the coronavirus has slowed Miriam down at all, as she explained, “It was kind of my turn, I guess.”

A source tells Page Six, “They are keeping it low-key but they are done. Kim has hired [divorce attorney] Laura Wasser and they are in settlement talks.”
Other insiders say the “divorce is imminent.”
The writing has been on the wall for awhile. Kim hasn’t been seen wearing her wedding ring, and Kanye is still holed up at his Wyoming ranch, where he stayed over the holidays.
The source adds, “Kim got Kanye to go up there [to Wyoming] so they could live separate lives and quietly get things sorted out to separate and divorce. She’s done.”
The insider says Kim’s “just had enough of” Kanye’s mental health struggles and crazy behavior, including his controversial run for president.
For his part, Kanye is said to be “completely over the entire family” and “wants nothing to do with them.”
Things might not go smoothly in the divorce proceedings. The source said, “Kim is trying to get Kanye to turn over the Calabasas house to her, because that’s where the kids are based and growing up. That is their home.”
Turns out “she owns all the land and adjoining lots around the house but Kanye owns the actual house.”
Kim and Kanye wed in 2014. They have four children: daughter North, 7, son Saint, 5, daughter Chicago, 2, and son Psalm, 1 month.

The show will not go on for the Grammy Awards — which have been postponed until an unspecified date.
This year’s ceremony was scheduled for January 31st, but organizers cited the latest COVID spike as a reason for taking it off the calendar for now. The initial plan was to stage a scaled-down show with no live audience, but even that proved to be too difficult to pull off.
A source tells Rolling Stone that this year’s ceremony is likely to be held in March, but could not confirm whether Trevor Noah would remain signed on as host. The 2021 Grammy nominations were led by Beyoncé who picked up nine nominations, while Taylor Swift followed with six nods.

Dead or alive the IRS wants its money from the estate of Prince. The Internal Revenue Service says the executors of the pop star’s estate under-valued it by about 80-million dollars. The government is looking for back taxes to be paid in the amount of 32-million bucks, with an added penalty in the millions. Prince died nearly five years ago without a will, making it one of the messiest court cases Minnesota has ever seen. His six siblings are waiting for their cut.

The Hockey Writers say the Los Angeles Kings have removed a Taylor Swift banner from the Staples Center because their fans think it is cursed. The Kings have been covering the banner since October 2019. They have not had any playoff success since Taylor’s banner was hung on August 21, 2015.

Justin Bieber rang in 2021 with a performance that was his first in more than three years. And he spaced on the lyrics to a couple of songs.
Justin flubbed the opening line of his 2015 hit song, “Sorry.” He apologized to his followers and admitted the obvious, (quote) “I forget the words.”
Something similar happened while singing “Love Yourself.” Either Bieber needed more rehearsal time, or he’s still rusty after a three-year layoff from performing on stage.
The $25 pay-per-view concert streamed from The Beverly Hilton hotel. Bieber built a stage over the hotel pool. (Daily Mail)
