‘Fly-in’ at Southwest Michigan Regional Airport Saturday to include free plane rides, inspiring stories
Set for this Saturday at the Southwest Michigan Regional Airport will be the Harriet Quimby Women of Aviation Fly-In, a community event for one and all to learn more about the airport, aviation, and have some fun.
Airport spokesperson Nick Gunn tells us they’re looking to engage the community and tell some inspiring stories.
“We’re giving away at least three $700 scholarships to students who want to break their way into aviation,” Gunn said. “We’ll have different planes out so everybody can just come out free, plane rides for at least the first 100 guests. So it’s just going to be a great time with food trucks and fun.”
The event is named for Harriet Quimby, who was the first woman in the United States to receive a pilot’s license. In 1912, she became the first woman to fly solo across the English Channel. Gunn also noted she was a Michigander.
On hand for this Saturday’s fly-in will be another hero of women in aviation. Sarah Deal was the first female Marine selected for naval aviation training in 1993 and subsequently became the Marine Corps’ first female aviator in 1995. She’ll be there to speak about her experiences.
“We wanted to create a space where we highlight local women and create a space at the airport for the community to come and just enjoy an amazing time. It’s a completely free event.”
Throughout the day, attendees will have the chance to hear the stories of women working in different sectors of aviation.
Gunn says the fly-in seeks to inspire the next generation of women to pursue careers in the field. It will be held at the airport on Saturday from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. All are welcome.
