A Cooler Week Along the Peninsulas

General Events

A look at public gatherings, library rooms, music halls, and shoreline towns in the days ahead across Leelanau, Old Mission, and nearby Lake Michigan communities.

By mid-September, the light goes flatter a little earlier, and the wind off the lake has a way of lifting paper notices in shop windows before supper. You can see it in the blue jackets back on the hooks by the door, in the apples stacked at farm stands, in the damp sheen on a harbor railing after a cold night. Someone pauses under a library bulletin board, one hand on the glass, reading closely before folding the program into a coat pocket.

Early in the week, Northport keeps company with the quiet, all-day “For the Birds” Art Exhibition at Leelanau Township Library, running Monday through Thursday, while Frankfort has “Writing the Constitution” at Benzie Shores District Library on Monday afternoon and a performance of “Come From Away” at The Garden Theater that evening. Monday night on Old Mission, Peninsula Community Library has “Singing the Good Old Songs Again,” and Tuesday brings a full spread nearby: “Invasive Species 101” at Leland Township Library, “Preview the New Library Catalog” at Suttons Bay Bingham District Library, “Local Ballot Proposals Explained” at City Opera House in Traverse City, and the weekly Open Mic with Chris Sterr at Traverse City Whiskey Co.

Wednesday settles into that shoulder-season mix of practical and neighborly. Peninsula Community Library hosts “Learn to Crochet” in the afternoon and “Peninsula Insights” in the evening. In Traverse City, RESILIENCE Night lands at Hull Park, and The Amara Studio & Collective hosts the NoMiWoman Connections Event. Over in Elk Rapids, there’s “The Extraordinary Caterpillar” Film Screening at Elk Rapids Cinema, while Benzonia has “HOA’s & Native Plants can Coexist!” at Mills Community House. Thursday evening turns back toward the peninsula with Pageturners Book Club at Peninsula Community Library, and out in Interlochen, Guest Artist Recital: ZaRiah Woodwind Quintet is set for Dendrinos Chapel and Recital Hall.

By the weekend ahead, the region spreads out a bit. Friday, September 18, The Music House Museum in Williamsburg hosts David Chown for a 70s Piano Tribute. Saturday, September 19, Cider by the Bay Fest fills West Bay Shore Drive in Traverse City. Looking a few days farther into the same stretch, Tuesday, September 22 brings Faculty Recital: Hae Won Jang, organ and piano at Interlochen, and Wednesday, September 23, An Evening with Lucy Foley comes to City Opera House. Thursday, September 24 carries Celebrating CELINE with Jenene Caramielo there, and Friday, September 25 turns especially busy with Music: New Beginnings at Interlochen and TC Germanfest 2026 at Trinity Lutheran Church & School.

That same final weekend in the window has a few more notices worth keeping in mind as the evenings keep shortening. Saturday, September 26, City Opera House hosts 2026 Gala en Pointe…Disco Fever!, while Interlochen has the Strings Festival Faculty and Guest Artist Recital and The Music House Museum presents Silent Movie Performance with Silent But Deadly. Sunday, September 27, the 2026 Chetcuti-Evans Foundation Tea Dance is on in Benzonia, and City Opera House has Cinema Society TC – Sampler Event. Through it all, Peninsula Community Library keeps its weekly rhythm with Reading Dogs Lani & Rosie on September 15 and 22, Story Stew on September 23, and Eagle Encounter on September 21, the kind of smaller gatherings that sit alongside the larger ones and make up the real shape of a week here.
