A Cooler Week Around the Peninsulas

General Events

Early fall settles in across Leelanau and Old Mission, with community gatherings, library programs, nature walks, talks, and museum evenings filling the coming days.

The light has shifted now. By late afternoon, the maples along M-22 are already giving off a dull copper at the edges, and the wind comes across the open rows a little sharper than it did a week ago. A jacket gets tugged closed outside the post office, a flyer gets flattened against a bulletin board with one palm, and down toward the water the lake shows up mostly as a strip of cold brightness under a gray sky.

Tuesday, September 22 carries a full stretch of public events around the area. There is a Wildflower Walk at Grass River, a Digital Library Tour through the Glen Lake Community Library collections, and Solar Play Date for Families at Elmwood Township Park with Leelanau Energy. Later that day, The Return of the Bald Eagle with Dr. Carl Palazzolo is scheduled in Glen Arbor, while Copy the Constitution in Community is on at the Traverse Area District Library, and a Candidate Forum for Leelanau County Drain Commission and Leland Township trustee is set for Leland. In Traverse City, the day also includes Shake, Shimmy and Read at the Main Library and Tour Tuesdays at the Dennos Museum Center.

By midweek, the rhythm moves between library rooms, museum galleries, and smaller community spaces. On Wednesday, September 23, the Dennos Museum Center holds its 2026 Fall Exhibit Reception in Traverse City. Pride Week events in Traverse City continue through the week as well, with QUEERStory Storytelling on Tuesday evening, a Sign Making Party and Pride Happy Hour on Thursday, Comedy Night on Thursday night, and The Intimi Affair on Friday.

Heading into the weekend, the public notices and town calendars stay busy. Saturday, September 26 includes Community Conversations Pop Up Exhibition at the Leelanau Trail Caboose, while library and family programs continue around Traverse City and nearby branches through the week. The Suttons Bay farmers market season is still running into late October, which keeps Saturday morning active in the village even as the air turns cooler and people linger a little less at the curb. Across Leelanau, the usual pattern of museum talks, civic gatherings, and small community events is still very much in motion before October settles in.

There is also a quieter kind of week ahead on Old Mission and along the Lake Michigan shore communities nearby, where events tend to travel by conversation as much as by poster. Peninsula Community Library remains part of that pulse, and the larger Traverse City calendars continue to carry many of the region’s public lectures, arts gatherings, and family programs that draw people in from Northport, Leland, Suttons Bay, Maple City, Glen Arbor, and the Old Mission side. It is the time of year when folding chairs reappear in meeting rooms, headlights come on earlier in parking lots, and people stand for a moment outside before going in.
