A Quiet March Week, With Voices Gathering Around the Bay

Mid-month brings a familiar kind of movement up and down the peninsula roads: Leelanau Wine & Cheese, hosted across various wineries on the Leelanau Peninsula, runs Friday, March 13 through Sunday, March 15. It’s the sort of weekend you notice by the extra cars tucked into snowy gravel shoulders, the clink of glass at a tasting bar, and coats hung two-deep by the door while folks stamp snow off their soles.
That same weekend, Sunday, March 15, the Village at Grand Traverse Commons in Traverse City turns into something you can follow by sound—footsteps in hallways, a burst of laughter around a corner, then a voice carrying a Shakespeare line as The Ides of March: a roaming Shakespeare festival moves from space to space through the afternoon.
On the school-sports side of things, the MHSAA girls basketball district tournament is on the calendar in the first week of March, with first-round games beginning Monday, March 2 and district champions crowned by Friday, March 6. Around our slice of the map, that includes District 108 at Bear Lake with Lake Leelanau St. Mary, Leland, and Suttons Bay in the field, and District 69 hosted by Maple City Glen Lake with area teams in the bracket. It’s the season for gym-door hinges squeaking, pep-band drums echoing down cinderblock hallways, and the soft thump of warmups during that last quiet minute before the tip.
And if you’re watching a little further out on the calendar—still within reach—Saturday, March 7 brings Around the World On Ice 2026 with the Traverse City Figure Skating Club at Centre Ice Arena in Traverse City. It’s one of those winter staples where you feel the cold air hit your face the second you step in, and you hear blades carving circles long before the music fully takes over.
