Early September Around the Peninsulas
A look at the coming week across Leelanau, Old Mission, and the Lake Michigan shore, with music, rides, sails, and a few rooms worth stepping into before the evenings turn earlier.
By early September, the light has started to leave the harbor a little sooner. A jacket gets pulled on without much thought. Down on the water, the flags lift straight for a minute and settle again, and on a bulletin board near a shop door a corner of a paper flyer keeps tapping the wood. Someone stops to read it with one hand on a coffee cup. Out in the vineyards, the rows are still green, but the edges of the day feel cooler now, and the lake shows up in quick flashes of silver between buildings and trees.
In the days just ahead, the calendar spreads out in that steady late-summer, early-fall way. On Wednesday, September 9, Wine Down Wednesday leaves from Discovery Cruises in Traverse City for an evening run across West Bay with Leelanau and Old Mission fruit country in view. That same night begins the first of two Fall Evening Sail with the Tall Ships departures in Traverse City, with another sail set for Thursday, September 10. Over in Northport, Live Music at Dune Bird Winery settles in on Thursday, September 3, then returns Thursday, September 10 and Sunday, September 13, the kind of gathering people hear about from a chalkboard sign or from somebody mentioning it over a counter.
Saturday, September 12, brings one of the fuller days around the peninsula roads with the Leelanau Harvest Tour beginning at Suttons Bay High School and rolling out through orchards, vineyards, villages, and long water views before the ride closes back in Suttons Bay. That same weekend feel carries into nearby rooms and stages too. At Bay Community Theatre in Suttons Bay, Live At The Bay: Jon Langford and Sally Timms opens the fall season on Friday, September 18, just beyond this immediate week, and it is already the kind of date people are noting now on folded programs and refrigerator calendars.
A little farther inland in Interlochen, the coming stretch turns quieter and more formal. Opening Convocation at Interlochen Center for the Arts is set for Saturday, September 5 in Kresge Auditorium. Looking just past the one-week mark, the next run of public events there includes An Afternoon with Martin Rock on Wednesday, September 16, Guest Artist Recital: ZaRiah Woodwind Quintet on Thursday, September 17, and the Visual Arts Faculty Exhibition opening Friday, September 18. Those are the kinds of September events that arrive with campus foot traffic, a few car doors closing in the dusk, and paper programs being folded once and tucked under an arm.
So around Leelanau, Old Mission, and the shore towns, the next several days carry that familiar turn in the season: boats still moving, vineyard stops still active, music still carrying out across patios, but with earlier evening shadow on the sidewalks in Suttons Bay, Northport, and Traverse City. It is a week of rides, sails, and small gatherings, noticed the same way most people notice them here — from a poster in a window, a conversation at the counter, or a line on the town calendar before heading back out into the wind.
