Late August Notes Along the Peninsula
A look at the next stretch of August across Leelanau, Old Mission, and the Lake Michigan shore, where vineyard music, library talks, and small-town gatherings settle into the last long light of summer.
By late August, the light has a different angle to it. It catches the sides of the marinas a little lower, lays bright across vineyard rows, and turns the dust on a roadside shoulder pale gold by evening. You can hear screen doors closing a little earlier now, and on a village sidewalk somebody pauses to smooth a folded program against the palm of one hand while the lake breeze moves the corner of a poster in a shop window.
In Glen Arbor and the Sleeping Bear side of the week, the calendar stays active in a way that feels natural for August. On Thursday, August 20, Horse and Wagon Tours in the Port Oneida Rural Historic District return in the morning, and the Artist-in-Residence Presentation featuring Rachel Mentzer settles in at the Glen Arbor Arts Center later that morning. That same afternoon brings M22 Glen Arbor Live Music at the M22 Wine Patio. Friday, August 21, Luke Woltanski Live takes over the evening at Glen Arbor Wines. Then the next week circles back with another Horse and Wagon Tour on Thursday, August 27, along with M22 Glen Arbor Live Music and Chris Smith Live at Glen Arbor Wines that night. Saturday, August 29, keeps music going with M22 Glen Arbor Live Music in the afternoon and Rhett & John at Glen Arbor Wines after sunset.
Vineyard stops carry a good share of the sound this week. French Valley Vineyard near Lake Leelanau opens the stretch with Live Music at French Valley: Frank & Friends on Monday, August 17, then picks it back up with Live Music at French Valley: Jesse Jefferson on Monday, August 24. Over at Rove Winery on the Leelanau side of the county, Wednesday, August 19 brings The Vineyard Experience as part of the TC Food & Wine Festival, Thursday, August 20 follows with Which Wine Are You?, and Friday, August 21 turns into Live At Rove with Empire HWY. A week later, Friday, August 28, Live at Rove brings Jesse Jefferson to the Gallagher Estate.
On Old Mission Peninsula, the Peninsula Library & Historical Society has Great American Journey presented by Rick Iacoboni on Thursday, August 13, just ahead of this coming week’s run of events, and that library calendar remains one of those places locals keep an eye on as August moves along. Around the broader shoreline communities, this is also the stretch when people keep checking village boards, chamber calendars, and flyers taped near cafe counters for the next concert, market, lecture, or family gathering, because the season is still full but the days are beginning to narrow.
What holds it all together is the way these last weeks of August move from one shoreline town to the next without much fuss: a wagon rolling through Port Oneida, chairs set out on a wine patio, a microphone stand in a tasting room, sailboat masts bright against the bay, and headlights starting to show on M-22 before the music is over. It is summer still, but not the loud middle of it. More the part where people linger a little, listen closely, and notice what is left in the light.
