Long Light, Fresh Signs, and a Busy Coastline Week
A calm look ahead across Leelanau, Old Mission, and nearby shore towns for June 2026.
The middle of June has that particular Lake Michigan feel: long daylight that hangs around the porch steps, and a steady breeze that keeps the cottonwood fluff moving in little drifts along the curb. You can hear screen doors clap once in a while, and the gulls argue somewhere you can’t quite see. Out by the road, a sun-faded yard sign leans into the wind, and on the bulletin board near the coffee counter, someone pauses a second—finger on a thumbtack—reading a flyer before folding it into a back pocket.
For this coming week—June 15 through June 29, 2026—the library and community rooms are staying busy in and around Traverse City and Old Mission. At Peninsula Community Library (Old Mission Peninsula), you’ll see Threads on Monday, June 15, plus the Reading Dogs visit on Tuesday, June 16, and Peninsula Insights on Wednesday, June 17, with Gentle Yoga on Thursday, June 18. Over at the Traverse Area District Library Main Library in Traverse City, the Summer Reading Club season gets its kickoff on Monday, June 15, including SRC Kickoff: Spoonman! (with another Spoonman session later that afternoon), and the week keeps rolling with Clubhouse: Craft and Play on Tuesday, June 16. Also in that same stretch at the Main Library: Mind Your Money: Smart Finances for Seniors and Guided Meditation for a Calm Mind and Kind Heart on June 16, then Ageless Grace on Monday, June 22, Your Dinosaur is Wrong!: The Bone Wars on Wednesday, June 24, and the Grand Traverse Area Genealogical Society meeting on Thursday, June 25.
On the civic side of the peninsula, Peninsula Township’s Zoning Board of Appeals meets Tuesday, June 16, at Peninsula Township Hall—one of those evenings where you can still see a stripe of gold light on the horizon through the parking-lot trees when you step back outside. Then, looking toward the weekend ahead, Log Cabin Day at Lighthouse Park, Old Mission Peninsula (with the Old Mission Historical Society) is set for Sunday, June 28—right in that sweet spot where the lake is bright, the grass is fast-growing, and the air can turn cooler the minute a cloud slides over the bay.
Out along the Leelanau shore communities, the steady rhythm of farmers markets is back in full swing—tables, tents, canvas weights, and that early-morning shuffle of tote bags. In this week’s window you’ve got Glen Arbor Farmers Market on Tuesday, June 16 and Tuesday, June 23; Leland Farmers Market on Thursday, June 18 and Thursday, June 25; Northport Farmers Market on Friday, June 19 and Friday, June 26; Suttons Bay Farmers Market on Saturday, June 20 and Saturday, June 27; and Empire Farmers Market on Saturday, June 20 and Saturday, June 27.
And if you’re drifting through Suttons Bay as the evening cools off, Friday, June 19 brings the Summer Artisan Art & Wine Walk downtown—one of those nights when you can hear footsteps change from pavement to boardwalk, and catch the soft scratch of a pen as someone signs a small program or receipt at the counter. Farther north, Saturday, June 27, Village Voices present “The Exuberance of Being Alive” at Northport Performing Arts Center—an indoor room filled with summer clothes and lake air that’s followed people in on their jackets, with the last light still visible out on Wing Street when the doors open.
