March Quiet, Paper Flyers, and a Busy Stretch Up the Peninsulas
A calm look at what’s coming around Leelanau, Old Mission, and the Lake Michigan shore in March 2026.
The house is warm, but the entryway tells the truth: damp boot prints, a little grit of road salt, and that soft hiss when a coat sleeve brushes against a hanging scarf. Outside the window the lake light is there without showing off—flat, silver-gray, the kind that makes porch rails and bare maple branches look extra sharp. Midweek brings a couple of reasons to get out after dark even if the sky’s doing that early-evening fade. On Tuesday, March 3 (tonight, for anybody catching this right as it posts), Great Lakes Center for the Arts screens Pan’s Labyrinth. And later in the window, on Sunday, March 15, the same venue has Fantastic Fungi in the afternoon—good timing for a day when the wind off the water can make you grateful for an indoor seat and a steady coat rack.
That second weekend is especially busy if you’re crisscrossing the peninsulas. Friday, March 13 through Sunday, March 15 is Leelanau Wine & Cheese across participating wineries on the Leelanau Peninsula. Also on Friday, March 13, Bay Community Theatre in Suttons Bay hosts Live At The Bay: Switchback, which fits the season—strings, warm room, people shaking the cold out of their shoulders as they come in. And on Sunday, March 15, Traverse City’s Village at Grand Traverse Commons hosts The Ides of March: a roaming Shakespeare festival, the kind of thing you can picture in hallways and tucked-in corners—voices carrying, footsteps on old floors, a quick pause to read the next sign.
And tucked into that same time frame, families with little ones will see Great Start Collaborative playgroup events happening across the region through March (including sites serving Leelanau County and nearby). Those tend to show up the way real local news does—mentioned at the library desk, or on a flyer you notice while you’re waiting for your receipt—bright paper, a couple of staples, and a phone number scribbled on the bottom from someone who already went once.
