May Light, Fresh Pours on the Peninsula

What’s Pouring on The Coast

A shoulder-season check-in from Leelanau: bright windows, soft breezes, and bottles that fit the in-between.

The first thing you notice in May is the way the light hangs around a little longer, but not quite long enough to feel like summer. A thin breeze works the screen just enough to make it tick in its frame, and you can hear a gull argue somewhere out over the bay even with the windows mostly shut. On the sill: a faint line of pollen, a set of keys with a damp lanyard, and a folded jacket that still smells like last night’s woodsmoke.

Inside, the floorboards feel cool under socks, and the whole room has that clean, just-opened-up-for-the-season sound—quiet, with little clicks and settling. Somebody sets a glass down carefully on the counter, the base making that small, steady tap you can feel more than hear. Beyond the window, the trees are halfway committed—buds, fresh leaves, and that soft green that looks different every time a cloud slides past.

That’s the lane May lives in on the Leelanau Peninsula: one foot in spring, one foot testing summer. The bottles you hear folks talking about right now match that rhythm—Chateau Grand Traverse Riesling (white), light on its feet for days that start chilly and finish warm; Black Star Farms Pinot Gris (white), the kind of pour that makes sense when the porch door keeps getting opened and closed. Over on the Old Mission side, you’ll also catch people bringing home Brys Estate Vineyard & Winery Chardonnay (white) for those brighter afternoons, and Mawby “Sex” (sparkling) when the evening turns calm and you can finally hear the frogs start up again.

It’s not patio season in full—not yet. It’s more like threshold season: shoes by the door, a sweater within reach, and a quick check of the sky before you commit to a second glass. You can feel the lake in the background even when you’re not looking at it—cool air sneaking in when the door opens, a change in the light, a hush that settles over the neighborhood earlier than you expect.
