Mid-August Along the Peninsula
A calm look at the coming days around Leelanau, Old Mission, and the nearby Lake Michigan shore towns in August 2026.
By mid-August, the light has started to lean a little lower across the water, and you can hear it in town before you name it: gulls working the harbor, bike tires ticking over seams in the trail, screen doors easing shut after supper. A row of folding chairs sits angled toward a lawn stage, tomatoes stack red in shallow crates, and somebody pauses at a bulletin board with one hand on a paper program, reading the corners where the thumbtacks curl.
From Thursday, August 13 through Wednesday, August 19, the week begins in Glen Arbor and Northport with the kinds of gatherings that feel stitched into summer. Horse and Wagon Tours in the Port Oneida Rural Historic District return Thursday morning near Glen Arbor, and M22 Glen Arbor Live Music is set for Thursday afternoon at the M22 Wine Patio. Up at the tip of the peninsula, Community Coffee Hour at the Omena Historical Society and an Author Reading and Signing both land on Thursday, August 13, with Music in the Park: Neon Crows following Friday, August 14, in Northport. Saturday, August 15 brings the opening of the 2026 Harbor of Creativity Invitational at the Village Arts Building in Northport, while the Northport Village Planning Commission meets Wednesday, August 19. Across the peninsula, the regular farmers market rhythm keeps going: Leland on Thursday, Northport on Friday, and Suttons Bay and Empire on Saturday, all in their usual morning spaces, with crates, stems, bakery boxes, and a few people still carrying beach towels in the back seat.
Suttons Bay and the inland vineyard roads keep their own late-summer tempo. Friday Night Live continues at Shady Lane Cellars in Suttons Bay on Friday, August 14, and the patio music returns again Friday, August 21. Out on the Old Mission side, Bubbly Brunch at Old Mission Distilling continues on Saturdays, August 15 and August 22, with the room filling by late morning. At Rove Winery near Traverse City, The Vineyard Experience is scheduled for Wednesday, August 19, and Live At Rove with Empire HWY follows on Friday, August 21, the sort of evening where the chairs face west and people listen with a glass held low at their knee.
The second half of the stretch, from Thursday, August 20 through Wednesday, August 26, carries more of that same August mix of art, music, and ordinary public life. Glen Arbor Arts Center hosts AIR Presentation: Rachel Mentzer on Thursday, August 20, then opens Taking Flight with an Opening Reception on Friday, August 21; Poetic Visions Of Port Oneida remains on view through August 27, and the outdoor Northern Vignettes work stays in place beyond that. In Northport, Gentle Yoga Practice returns Thursday, August 20. Traverse City begins its wider pull that same week with Traverse City Food & Wine running August 19 through 23, close enough that its traffic, conversations, and evening movement will be felt from Old Mission to the Leelanau crossroads. By the time Wednesday, August 26 arrives, the week has that familiar northern-Michigan look: hand-lettered signs at the edge of parking lots, light on marina masts, and jackets reappearing once the sun drops behind the trees.
