Quiet February Nights, Busy Peninsula Week
From storytimes and screenings to ski trails, chili bowls, and snowy vineyard stops—what’s coming up around The Coast.
Inside, the heat clicks on and off like it’s thinking about it. A damp line of mittens hangs over a vent. Snow squeaks under boots in the entryway, then goes silent on the library carpet. Out the window, Lake Michigan is only a wash of pewter light—more sky than water—flattened by a low, gray ceiling. Somebody at the community board pauses a second, thumb holding the edge of a curling flyer, then smooths it back down.
As we move through the heart of February 2026, the next stretch of days brings a steady hum of indoor gatherings—with a few outdoor plans that’ll depend on how the wind behaves. Early in the week in Traverse City, the Dennos Museum Center, Milliken Auditorium at NMC hosts “The Librarians”: An Indie Lens Pop-Up Screening on Wednesday, February 11, with a community reflection and a reception afterward. That same Wednesday night, EXPAND Storytelling #10 lands at The Alluvion in Traverse City—one of those evenings where you can hear the room settle as the first voice starts. And on the Traverse Area District Library side, February stays busy: Storytime and Sing & Stomp, plus Musical Storytime with the TC Philharmonic, and the week rolls on with DIY Delights, Adult Escape Room, Baby Time, Toddler Time, Tell-a-Tail (reading with therapy dogs), TADL Stitchers, and Voter Information with the League of Women Voters of Grand Traverse Area at the Main Library in Traverse City and branches nearby.
Saturday, February 14, the shoreline towns get that particular winter bustle—parkas brushing in doorways, cheeks pink from the walk across the lot. In Suttons Bay, Yeti Fest spreads across the village with Yeti Fun at the Suttons Bay Library, a movie at the Bay Theatre, scavenger hunts, hotdogs with the Suttons Bay Fire Department, face painting at the Friendship Center, and the strolling chili cook-off. Down in Traverse City, Sweetheart of a Sale runs February 14 through Monday, February 16 in downtown—window lights on State Street and Front Street looking a little warmer than they should. And out on the trails, the 50th Annual North American Vasa Festival of Races runs Saturday and Sunday, February 14–15, based at Timber Ridge RV & Recreation Resort in Traverse City, with Nordic ski and fatbike events across the Vasa Pathway.
Then the following weekend, you can feel the peninsula widen out again. In Leland, Leland Winter Windfall is set for Saturday, February 21—right in that pocket of late-winter where the snowbanks look taller than the street signs and the sidewalks narrow to single-file. Over at Interlochen Center for the Arts, Winterlochen (Saturday, February 21) fills campus with family-friendly arts activities and a kid’s performance, and Sunday, February 22 brings Be Like Blippi Tour! to Corson Auditorium—an indoor afternoon that makes sense when the sun drops early and the parking lots refreeze by dusk.
And if you’re the kind who keeps an eye on the vineyards even in the off-season—when the rows are dark against the snow and the tasting rooms smell faintly like wet wool and cork—Snow on the Vines runs Friday through Sunday, February 20–22 along the Leelanau Peninsula Wine Trail. It’s the sort of weekend where you see the same set of tire tracks pulling into different lots, and you recognize neighbors by hats instead of faces.
