Wind, Vines, and Mid-September Notes

General Events

A look at the public gatherings, live music, and shoreline plans taking shape around Leelanau and Old Mission in the coming week.

By mid-September, the light is already thinning a little sooner over the peninsulas. You can hear it in town before you name it: a flag line tapping a pole, dry leaves skittering along a curb in Suttons Bay, a screen door easing shut somewhere off a side street. Out by the water, the air has that cooler edge that sends people reaching for a fleece or tugging a scarf straighter at the neck, while vineyard rows still hold their late-season color under a paler sky.

The week opens with a run of familiar music nights that feel right for this point in September 2026. On Tuesday, September 8, Live Music at Bel Lago returns in Cedar. Wednesday, September 9, brings Wine Down Wednesday aboard Discovery Cruises in Traverse City. Thursday, September 10, there is Live Music featuring Jerry Byville at Mari Vineyards on Old Mission Peninsula and Live Music at Dune Bird Winery in Northport. Friday, September 11, Chateau Grand Traverse hosts Sound Bites: Live Music with Swingbone North, another Old Mission evening where people tend to stand a while before heading back to the car.

By Saturday, September 12, the region spreads out in a few directions at once. The Leelanau Harvest Tour starts from Suttons Bay High School and moves riders through farms, orchards, villages, and shoreline roads. Over in Glen Arbor that evening, Saturday Soundwaves at the River Club picks up along the Crystal River. Bel Lago in Cedar also has Live Music at Bel Lago that afternoon, and on Sunday, September 13, the weekend carries on with another Live Music at Bel Lago date and Live Music at Dune Bird Winery in Northport. These are the kinds of events people keep track of from a flyer near the door, or by stopping to read a poster twice before folding the program into a jacket pocket.

Looking a little farther into the same 7-to-14-day stretch, Tuesday, September 15, brings another Live Music at Bel Lago in Cedar. Wednesday, September 16, Wine Down Wednesday returns on West Bay. Thursday, September 17, there is Live Music featuring John Richard Paul at Mari Vineyards and another Live Music at Dune Bird Winery in Northport. Friday, September 18, Chateau Grand Traverse hosts Sound Bites: Live Music with Jeff Linsell, while Black Star Farms in Suttons Bay has an Estate & Wine Tour earlier in the day.

Next Saturday, September 19, keeps that early-fall pattern going with Live Music at Bel Lago in Cedar, Saturday Soundwaves at the River Club in Glen Arbor, and Sound Bites: Live Music with Luke Woltanski at Chateau Grand Traverse. By Sunday, September 20, there is one more Live Music at Bel Lago date and another Live Music at Dune Bird Winery in Northport, with Black Star Farms in Suttons Bay also holding an Estate & Wine Tour on Monday, September 21. It is a week of roads between vineyards and harbor towns, folding chairs near patios, and that brief hush just before the music starts.
