South Haven High School has been highlighted by the Education Trust Midwest for its efforts to help students succeed coming out of the pandemic. It’s been identified as a Building the Hope School by the group.

Education Trust Midwest Policy Director Jen DeNeal tells us the Building the Hope School initiative looks for schools with high populations of students of color and high test scores. They’ve picked five schools in Michigan this year.

“South Haven High School made our list as a Building the Hope School to Watch because its Latino students and students from low-income backgrounds both exceeded statewide performance on a section of the SAT known as the evidence-based reading and writing section,” DeNeal said.

DeNeal says South Haven High School has distinguished itself in educating a diverse student body with a lot of migrant students. She says they do that by providing academic and cultural supports like special classes and clubs.

“It’s just really cool to read about and hear about what they’re doing and how they’re really so intentional in what they do for the kids. The passion comes through really clearly.”

DeNeal says Building the Hope Schools represent what it means to provide opportunities for all Michigan students.

The Education Trust sent a reporter out to each school being considered to interview students and staff as part of the process.
