About four years ago, Paxton Burns had an idea to set up a food box on the front yard of his home, allowing people to donate and pick up non-perishable food to help others in his community.
Thanks to Paxton’s hard work and generous spirit, there are now 75 Paxton’s Blessing Boxes found outside homes and schools in Sedgwick County, Kansas — as well as other parts of Kansas and even in five other states.
And, his efforts to help those in need get food with no questions asked has resulted in Paxton winning a special humanitarian award during a virtual ceremony.
Paxton is clearly wise beyond his years, explaining that he thinks it’s “pretty cool” that he can “help people who sometimes don’t have the stuff that he has.” (The Wichita Eagle)

Two sisters from Nebraska who haven’t seen each other in 53 years were – amazingly – reunited, due to coronavirus.
Back in May, 73-year-old Doris Crippen ended up in the emergency room and battled back from coronavirus.
When Doris was released from the hospital, she had to spend some extra time getting some rehab work on her arm.
It was in the rehab center that she encountered a wonderful surprise … Her long-lost sister, 53-year-old Bev Boro, was working there.
Bev recognized Doris’ name on a patient board – and the lives of the two women changed forever.
Doris and Bev have the same father, but different mothers – and they haven’t seen each other in 53 years, when Bev was just a baby.
Doris admitted that she had tried to find her siblings several times over the years, but failed.
It ended up taking a global pandemic to, finally, bring these two women together… and inspire them to begin planning a family reunion. (WTTG-TV)

A group of teenagers in Cambria, California, are working to help those struggling during these complicated times by raising thousands of dollars for food, supplies, rent and utilities.
The high school students started with simple fundraising events, such as tamale sales, car washes and dinners with raffles.
But, they’ve taken things to a whole new level this year with big fundraising drives, with some donors pitching in $1,000 each.
They’ve raised tens of thousands of dollars and have been able to help about 70 families.
Their work isn’t done, of course, because there are still plenty of people in need.
These teens plan to continue to help as much as they can, using all the lessons they’ve learned so far to impact even more families moving forward. (The Tribune)

15-year-old Lorenzo Liberti of Lakewood Ranch, Florida, has been making the most of his summer vacation — by carving wooden American flags to raise money for homeless veterans.
He actually started this project eight months ago, working day and night in his garage to carve pinewood into amazing pieces of art that he sells and donates to help people in need.
But since COVID-19, Lorenzo changed his mission just a bit, turning his attention to honoring medical workers across the country.
It seems Lorenzo isn’t going to quit carving anytime soon, explaining that the day he stops working “is a day that a hero could be forgotten.” (WTSP-TV)

A pair of sisters, who had not seen one another for 53 years, were reunited thanks to the coronavirus.
Doris Crippen and Bev Boro had searched for each other for years. It just happened that they reconnected at a Nebraska rehabilitation center. Bev worked the floor that day at Dunklau Gardens dispensing medications. Doris was a resident recovering from a COVID-19 infection.
Bev recalled their coincidental reunion, (quote) “When I saw Doris’s name on the patient board, I was so nervous. My heart was racing.”
They have the same father, Wendall Huffman, who was married three times and had 10 children. Doris at age 73 is the oldest while Bev is the youngest. She entered the foster care system and eventually adopted.
Looking back, Doris believes catching the coronavirus was a “blessing. I am the happiest person in the world. I cannot believe I finally found my sister.” (The Washington Post)

Members of the Salt Lake County Sheriff’s Office in Utah recently rescued a dehydrated man — and his 120-pound dog — and got them both to the bottom of a mountain safely.
The hiker and his dog, Leo, were hiking on Mount Olympus in hot weather when Leo began showing signs of dehydration on their hike.
The man tried to keep Leo cool and gave him water, but Leo wasn’t responding. The poor dog was done hiking.
So the man called for help.
Salt Lake County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue teams went up the mountain and worked their magic. They brought water for the man — and rescue equipment to carry the dog down the trail.
Arrangements were made with a local vet to see Leo as soon as he was off the mountain.
While it was a difficult adventure for everyone involved, the search and rescue team said that Leo seemed happy to get the help he needed and to finally be off the mountain. (KTSU-TV)

When the pandemic started, Alexandra LittleJohn of Denver, Colorado, started working with a company called Fresh Guys Produce, buying and selling boxes of produce that would have otherwise gone to waste.
She started buying food boxes filled with many items, including corn, oranges, apples, onions and eggs — and selling enough of them to pay her bills.
But then Alexandra went further, buying even more boxes and donating them to families in need.
Her effort — which she calls the LittleJohn Produce Box Project — helps everyone involved. It helps local food growers and reduces the waste of food. It also puts food on the table of those who need it most. And, it also encourages people to stay out of grocery stores, which reduces the risk of catching the virus.
It even generates money for charity groups with the produce project often donating nearly or all of their profits to organizations large and small.
Amazingly, Alexandra has sold more than 1,300 boxes and donated more than 460 boxes. She hopes this is just the beginning of even bigger things to come. (Washington Post)

In Washington, D.C., firefighters rescued six dogs from a burning home. And thanks to their efforts, all the dogs survived.
Four residents had already gotten out of the house by the time first responders arrived and weren’t injured. But, the dogs were still inside.
So, firefighters went in looking for them. After saving five dogs, a firefighter discovered a sixth dog, lying unconscious in the basement beneath a table.
A member of the department’s rescue squad carried the dog out, gave the dog oxygen and water — and actually revived it.
The firefighters explained that their first priority is to preserve human life. But, they also do whatever they can to save animals as well, understanding that pets are a big part of the family. (CBS News)

A charity group that sends sneakers to soldiers overseas has seen a surge in donations — especially since COVID-19 hit.
The group, Sneakers for Soldiers, was founded by a military mom back in 2018 to help get sneakers to military personnel in Iraq, Afghanistan and Syria.
And when the pandemic started it became even harder for the soldiers to get sneakers over there.
Luckily, donations increased, which means more shoes are being shipped — and helping even more soldiers.
Each shoe is chosen for each soldier, depending on his or her feet and the conditions in which the soldier is serving.
Then, a label is attached to each pair with a message from the donor.
The sneakers are providing the troops with motivation and moral, as they continue to serve in these difficult times. (ABC News)
